JAMAICA N.Y. — The York College men's volleyball team picked up a pair of victories on Thursday night, defeating John Jay College, 3-0 (25-0, 25-11, 25-13) and Mt. St. Vincent, 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-20).
In the opening match against John Jay (2-4, 0-3 CUNYAC), York won the opening set by forfeit after John Jay was late arriving to the match. CUNYAC rules dictate the first set must be forfeited if the team arrives more than 15 minutes late to the match.
The Cardinals then took care of business quickly in the other two sets, hitting .380 and holding John Jay to a negative hitting percentage.
Maximo Bonilla and
Knudson Andre each had five kills to lead York, while
Leszek Stankiewicz and
Randy Adams had chipped in four kills apiece.
The second match was much tougher. Mt. St. Vincent (5-4) looked strong early on, jumping out to a 14-5 advantage and later a 21-14 cushion in the opening set. But York regrouped and scored eight unanswered points to go ahead, 22-21. The Cardinals would eventually earn set point and then benefitted from a MSV hitting error to go up 1-0.
The second set was also very close but was a more back-and-forth affair. The largest lead for York was four points, while most of the set was a one or two-point margin. York would hold on though and took a 2-0 lead.
In the third set, York jumped out to a commanding, 19-8 lead. Mt. St. Vincent would rally late to make it close, but York held on to win the set and the match.
