Williams Propels York to Win over Brooklyn

BOX SCORE
BROOKLYN, N.Y.— York College junior center Jaron Williams had one of his best games of the season, scoring 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting, while also grabbing 15 rebounds and blocking five shots to lead the Cardinals men's basketball team to a 70-57 victory over rival Brooklyn College.

Brooklyn focused its efforts on trying to contain York's Michael Woods—the second-leading scorer in Division III—who the Bulldogs held to 19 points on 6-of-19 shooting.  But the Bulldogs failed to account for Williams who was a force around the basket all afternoon.  York also got solid efforts from Donald Rodriguez (9 points, 7 rebounds), and Justin Garvin (9 points, 5 assists) in what was a sharp contrast to the last time these two teams met.

When these two teams last met, back on December 10, they combined to score 200 points, as York won 107-93.  This time around was a much more defensive-minded game.  The Cardinals held the Bulldogs to just 30 percent shooting on the night. The Cardinals shot a more respectable 45 percent from the field but were held to just 22 percent from long range (4-of-18).

The game was close for most of the first half until York pulled away in the final minutes before halftime, and then built on that lead when they came out in the second half.  The Cardinals led by just four points (23-19) with 5:29 left in the opening half, but closed with a 13-2 run to go up by 15 points (36-21).  Then York used that momentum to open the second half with a 9-2 stretch to extend its lead to 45-22.   Woods helped spark the run with a four-point play shorty after the half and then subsequent three-pointer to cap the run.  From there, York cruised to victory, leading by double digits the rest of the way.

In the loss, Brooklyn (11-13, 7-8 CUNYAC) was led by Jai Kellman, who scored a game-high 21 points.  Justin Staton had seven points and ten boards.

York (17-7, 12-3 CUNYAC) will close out the regular season on Tuesday, when they host Hunter College at 8 p.m.   It will also be senior night and the four senior members of the team—Michael Woods, DeVoren Abrams, Donald Rodriguez and Thomas Hart will be honored prior to the game.  Admission is free!
