JAMAICA, N.Y. - The York College women's basketball team fell to Lehman College, 77-67, on Tuesday evening despite winning the rebound battle, 55-40.
York started off the game hot, leading 19-12 after the first ten minutes of action, in large part to
Stayce Kay Muirhead's effort on the glass, who collected five offensive rebounds in the first ten minutes of action.
This was truly a game of runs, mostly by Lehman, who responded to York's early lead by going on a 16-0 run, putting them up 28-19. York would narrow that gap to just two points, after some key baskets by
Shauncia McClendon, allowing Lehman to go into the half with a 36-34 lead.
In the second half, Lehman would build another strong lead, going up by 10 points with 13 minutes left, after going on an 8-0 run. However, York would not give up and closed the gap to 60-57, thanks to the play of
Angelika Ruggiano, who had four points and two assists during a key stretch, to bring York within three with 6:37 left in the second half.
Lehman made sure York never got closer than that, however, going on a 17-10 run in the closing minutes to give them the victory.
It was a big team scoring effort by both teams. For Lehman, Amani Lightbourne, and Jennifer Navarro scored 19 points each, while Amely Del Rosario finished with 18 points, nine assists, and three steals.
For York, Muirhead and
Danielle Dunn both finished in double figures. Dunn had 17 points and eight rebounds, while Muirhead scored 16 points and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds—10 of which came on the offensive end.
This win brings Lehman to 14-9 on the year (8-6 CUNYAC), and drops York to 3-20 on the year (2-12 CUNYAC). York's next game will be a road game against Brooklyn College, on Saturday February 15
th at 12:30 p.m.
