RIVERDALE, N.Y. – After leading by as many as 15 points in the first half, the York College men's basketball team held off a late rally by the College of Mount Saint Vincent to defeat the Dolphins on the road by a score of 71-66 Monday night.
York's
Franklin Green had his best game as a Cardinal in his first start of the season, as he led all players with 20 points, while shooting 80 percent from the field (8-10).
Jaron Williams also had a big game, scoring 13 points and grabbing 15 rebounds, while
Cyril Reid chipped in 12 points. Point guard
Du'Quan Lawson had eight assists—his second highest total of the season.
The Cardinals looked to be in control after a solid first half of play. A Green jumper at the 14:22 mark put York up by nine (17-8). Later in the half, a 9-0 run capped off by a
Ryan St. John three-pointer, gave the Cardinals, what seemed to be, a commanding 28-13 advantage with 6:57 left in the opening half.
But the Dolphins didn't quit and played tough in the second half. An 11-1 run by Mt. St. Vincent midway through the second half cut the deficit to just three points (53-50) with 9:39 to go. The Dolphins would eventually tie the game on a James Zuccaro three-pointer with 6:59 remaining.
But York never relinquished the lead. A few minutes later, jumpers by Green, Williams and
Terell Roper over a two-minute span put York up by six points with just 2:56 to go. The Dolphins cut the lead back to two points on consecutive Zuccaro buckets, but York would seal the deal with a three-pointer by Reid two possessions later.
The Dolphins, who fell to 6-2, were led by Ammad Alkhulaidi, who had 10 points and 14 rebounds. Antonio Johnson had a team-high 14 points.
York improves to 8-3 with the win. York will return to action on Saturday with its toughest test of the season. The Cardinals host #5 Dickinson College at 3 p.m. Admission is free, so come out and support York!
