NEW YORK, N.Y. – The York College men's basketball team came up short in a key early-season match-up against Baruch College, losing to the Bearcats by a score of 62-49 on Friday night.
The match-up pitted two teams who came into the game with perfect records in City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play. But Baruch got the best of York to improve to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the CUNYAC. York drops to 6-3 overall, 3-1 CUNYAC. The loss also snapped a streak of 12 straight wins for York against CUNYAC opponents, which dated back to January 29 of last season. That loss was also against the Bearcats.
Baruch held York to a season-low 49 points and a .293 shooting percentage. Despite the tough night, York led for most of the first half until Baruch pulled ahead by one (28-27) at the break.
The Bearcats led for the entire second half, but York trailed by just six points (49-43) with 6:03 left to play. However, Baruch closed the game on a 13-6 run to pull away.
Jaron Williams led the Cardinals with 15 points and 10 boards—his fourth double-double of the season.
Du'Quan Lawson added ten points and five assists.
Cyril Reid pulled down a team-high 11 boards, while
Ryan St. John chipped in nine points, connecting on three treys.
Baruch was led by Granville Gittens, who netted 23 points and grabbed 11 boards. Chimaechi Ekekeugbor added 18 points and 11 rebounds.
York will close out the first half of the season, before taking a break for finals and the holidays, with a non-conference contest against SUNY Polytechnic Institute on Tuesday. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. in the York College Gymnasium.
