York Women’s Basketball Dominates in CUNYAC Opener vs. Medgar Evers

BROOKLYN, N.Y.— The York College women's basketball team opened up the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) portion of its schedule with a dominant, 70-37, victory over Medgar Evers College on Tuesday evening.

The Cardinals got a total team effort, with four players scoring in double figures.  Junior guard Samantha Bond led the way with 17 points on 7-13 shooting.  Angelika Ruggiano added 12 points and five assists, while Nia Rene also chipped in 12 points.  Junior center Jigcara Grant added notched an impressive double-double with ten points and 22 rebounds.  12 of those boards came on the offensive side.

Grant was the biggest reason for the large rebounding advantage as York pulled down 51 boards to just 35 for Medgar Evers.  The Cardinal defense was also a big factor.  York forced 29 turnovers and held the Cougars to just 31 percent shooting on the evening.

With the win, York is now 2-3, 1-0 in the CUNYAC, while Medgar Evers is 0-4, 0-1 CUNYAC.

The Cardinals will be idle until their home opener next Monday, December 1, vs. the College of Mt. St. Vincent at 6 p.m.
