BROOKLYN, N.Y.— York College senior guard
Omar St. John tied a school record for points in a game with 46 to lead the Cardinals to an 85-80 win on the road over Medgar Evers College Tuesday night.
St. John tied the record of his former teammate,
Michael Woods, who scored 46 last season in win over Hunter College on February 18, 2014. The previous mark stood for 27 years until Woods broke the record last year, but it took just a few months for St. John to tie Woods' mark.
When Woods set the record last year, York won in blowout fashion, but tonight the Cardinals needed just about all of St. John's points to pull out the win in the City University of New York Athletic Conference opener. St. John—a D3hoops.com Preseason All-American—hoisted up 29 shots from the field, making 16 of them, including five three-pointers. He was also an efficient, 9-of-11 from the free throw line.
York appeared to have the game well in hand when a 13-4 run midway through the second half gave the Cardinals a 58-41 advantage. But the Cougars made a furious rally, outscoring York 34-16 over a 12-minute span to take a 75-74 advantage with just 1:23 to go.
But the Cardinals were finally able to stop the Cougars' momentum in the final minute.
Cyril Reid quickly put York back on top after successfully converting a three-point play. Then, after a defensive stop, York got the ball back and was fouled.
Jaron Williams hit the first free throw but missed the second. However, York got an offensive rebound and then got a lay-up from Reid to go up by five points.
Medgar got a quick bucket and then fouled St. John. St. John made both free throws in the final seconds to seal the win and to tie the record.
The Cardinals also got contributions from senior forward
Jaron Williams, who finished with a double-double (11 points, 11 boards) and Reid, who added 13 points and five rebounds.
Medgar Evers was led by Reynaldo Eloy with 20 points and Mark Hudson with 16.
York improves to 2-1, 1-0 CUNYAC, while the Cougars drop to 1-4, 0-1 CUNYAC.
The Cardinals will be back in action this Saturday when they visit the University of Rochester at 5 p.m. Video, audio and live stats are available by accessing the
