Women’s Basketball Loses to Virginia Wesleyan College in Second Game of the Season

FREDRICKSBURG, V.A. – The York women's basketball team played its second game of the season Sunday afternoon against Virginia Wesleyan College, losing 77-39 to the Marlins.

The Cardinals kept it close for the first 10 minutes of the game, but with 10:30 remaining in the first half, the Marlins went on a 19-12 run, taking a 12-point advantage to close out the half 37-25.

The Marlins bench came to play in the first half, outscoring York's bench 11-7. They also dominated the paint the whole game, scoring 18 points in the first half.  York created plenty of chances off turnovers, outscoring Wesleyan College 10-3 in the half.

The Marlins blew the game wide open in the start of the second going on a 21-4 run, eventually taking a 29-point lead and finishing the game out 77-39, winning the game by 38 points.

Virginia Wesleyan's bench scored 15 in the second half, and again dominated the paint, scoring 20 points.

Brittany Glasco of the Marlins finished the game with 20 points, on 6-9 shooting, knocking one down from long range, and hitting 7-10 from the stripe. Andrea Paphite scored 11 points, and went perfect from the line, hitting all four of her free throws. Nancy Kelly chipped in with 10 points on 5-9 shooting.

Angelika Ruggiano scored 14 points for York and recorded 3 assists en route to being named to the All-Tournament Team.  Shauncia McClendon added eight points and seven boards.

The Cardinals now fall to 0-2 and will be looking to get their first win this coming Wednesday night when they take on Yeshiva University, who currently hold a 0-2 record as well. Tip-off is at 8 p.m. on the campus of Baruch College.
