FREDRICKSBURG, V.A.- The York College women's basketball team lost their season opener at the University of Mary Washington Tournament against the host, Mary Washington, 88-40.
The opening half started with a long point-scoring streak for the Eagles, as they scored the game's first 19 points, featuring two three-pointers from Claire Haeuptle.
Shanelle Baldwin was the Cardinals' top player of the first half, as she grabbed four rebounds and collected five points. Haeuptle ended the half with eight points and finished with a game-high 16 points. York struggled to keep up with the high-scoring Eagles, as the first-half ended with a score of 46-14.
The second half was just as lopsided as the first half, as the Eagles outscored the Cardinals 42-26.
Jigcara Grant, first-year center for the Cardinals, collected 10 rebounds in the second half.
Samantha Bond added nine points in the game for the Cardinals. The Eagles' Aubrey Howland recorded eight points and five rebounds in the half, and ended the game with 14 points.
The Cardinals (0-1) will finish the University of Mary Washington Tournament by playing Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon at 12:00.
