Men’s Basketball Suffers Overtime Loss to McDaniel in Season Opener

MIDDLETOWN, P.A. – The York College men's basketball team suffered a heartbreaking, overtime loss to McDaniel College in their 2014-15 season opener Saturday afternoon at the Penn State University-Harrisburg Tournament, losing by a score of 69-65.

The Cardinals overcame an eight-point deficit in the second half, eventually taking the lead, only to see McDaniel tie the score in the final minute to send the game in overtime.  The Cardinals struggled badly in overtime, failing to make a field goal in the extra period.

York trailed 41-33 at the 15:39 but a 9-0 Cardinal run followed, giving York a 42-41 advantage with 13:09 to play.  A three-pointer by Frankin Green and a made jumper by Terell Roper off a fast break helped spark the run.

From there, it was a back-and-forth contest for the rest of regulation.  The Cardinals pulled ahead late, 63-61, after a pair of Omar St. John free throws, but McDaniel's Tim Stewart would tie the game in the final minute with a lay-up, sending the game into overtime.

In the overtime period, York was 0-7 from the field and 2-6 from the charity stripe.  McDaniel only managed three shots in overtime, but made two of them and also hit a couple free throws in the final seconds to seal the victory.

In the loss, York was led by Cyril Reid, who scored a game-high 19 points on 8-of-15 shooting.  Omar St. John contributed across the board, putting up a line of 16 points, seven boards, six assists and two steals.  Jaron Williams finished with 13 points and seven boards.

McDaniel was led by Stewart, with 15 points and five boards, and by Phillip Perry, who had 12 points and nine rebounds.

York will now have to settle for playing in the consolation game tomorrow against host Penn State-Harrisburg, who lost to CCNY in their game.  Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
