Women’s Soccer Closes Season Strong; Routs Medgar Evers, 6-0

Seniors Cornejo and Montalvan Each Score in Final Match; Freshman Wills Adds Hat Trick

BROOKLYN, N.Y.— It's been a tough season for the York College women's soccer team, but the Cardinals were able to finish the season on a high note, as they defeated Medgar Evers College by a score of 6-0 at Old Boys Field Monday afternoon.

York had big efforts from senior Jessica Cornejo, who closed her York career out with four assists and a goal, and from freshman Kennisha Wills, who capped off a promising freshman campaign with a three-goal performance.

Michelle Montalvan, York's' other senior, got her first career goal in her final match as a Cardinal.  Both Montalvan and Cornejo were part of York's first women's soccer team in 2011.

After 21 minutes of scoreless action, York got on the board when a Cornejo pass found Wills, who scored for the match's first goal.  Just four minutes later, Kimberly Gonzalez scored off another Cornejo pass from a corner kick.  It was Gonzalez's first goal of the season.  Cornejo got in on the action in the 35th minute when she scored following a penalty kick, giving the Cardinals a comfortable, 3-0 advantage going into halftime.

Wills kept it going for York out of the locker room, scoring in the 48th minute after Cornejo's third assist of the contest.  Montalvan then added a late goal in the 87th minute after the Medgar Evers goalie misplayed the ball.  Tori Koen picked up an assist on the play.  York then capped the scoring with Wills' third goal of the game, which was set up once again by Cornejo, in the 89th minute.

Sarah Hilaire earned a clean sheet in goal for York after she turned away nine Medgar Evers' shots.

With the win, York closes the 2014 season with a record of 3-13, 1-5 CUNYAC, while Medgar is now 0-14, 0-6 CUNYAC.

York will hope for better results in 2015, as new head coach Roberto Rivas will have a year under his belt and more time to recruit for the coming season.
