JAMAICA, N.Y.—The York College Women's Volleyball team got back in the win column with a convincing, 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-15) win over the College at Old Westbury on Tuesday night.
The Cardinals got a much-needed win after a tough stretch of losses.
Stayce Kay Muirhead got back on track herself with a nine-kill effort and a .368 hitting percentage. NaaDaira Patrick added seven kills and four digs.
Shauncia McClendon and
Kiranjeet Kaur each chipped in four kills, while Kaur added 20 assists, four aces and four digs.
After the two teams kept it close in the early parts of the first set, the Cardinals extended its two-point lead to 17-10, thanks in part to consecutive kills from McClendon and Patrick.
Kiranjeet Kaur would finish off the set at 25-16 with a kill.
York jumped out to an early, 9-3 advantage in the second set, as sloppy play by Old Westbury helped the Cardinals take the early lead. After a couple Old Westbury points, the Cardinals put together another big run, pushing the margin to 16-5. Old Westbury would close the gap a bit, but York would eventually put the second set away, 25-15, after a kill by Muirhead.
The third set was a tight one, with York holding a narrow, 8-7 lead. But following a Cardinal timeout, York scored the next five points to make it 13-7. York still held a six-point advantage at 20-14 when they scored five of the final six points to finish off the match.
The win improves York's record to 5-21, while Old Westbury falls to 1-14. The Cardinals return to action on Thursday night in their final home contest of the season against the College of Staten Island at 7 p.m. Senior's Muirhead and Patrick will be honored before the match.
