Men’s Soccer Drops Tough One to Lehman in OT

BRONX, N.Y.—After rallying to tie the match in the 89th minute of play, the York College men's soccer team saw its elation turn into despair quickly, as Lehman College scored the golden goal in the first minute of overtime, to defeat York 4-3 in an important CUNY Athletic Conference contest on Wednesday evening.

After opening up conference play with two wins, York has now lost its last two CUNY matches by one goal and now stands at 2-2 in the CUNYAC and 4-7 overall.  Lehman gets its first conference win and is now 3-7 overall, 1-2 in the CUNYAC.

It was an emotional roller coaster for the Cardinals all match.  York could not hold on to two separate leads, only to come back to force overtime before Lehman scored the game-winner.

The Cardinals opened the scoring in the 30th minute with freshman sensation Diron Duah netting his fourth goal of the year unassisted off a free kick.

The score would stay the same until just after halftime, when Lehman got the equalizer off a goal from Essosa Aluyi.  The Cardinals took back the lead in the 56th minute after Rachidi Amadou rocketed a shot from 15 yards out to beat the keeper.

Things were looking good for York until the 69th minute of action when the Lightning scored two quick goals over a span of 1:42 to take a 3-2 lead.  Aluyi evened the score for his second goal of the match and then Hugh Campbell scored off a header to make it 3-2.

York fought for the game-tying goal and got it just in the nick of time when Giuseppe Vera scored off a corner kick from Duah at 88:51, forcing overtime.  But just 28 seconds into overtime, Campbell put in a rebound in front of the net, giving the Lightning the exciting victory.

York will try to rebound from the tough loss when they host John Jay College on Saturday at 12 p.m. at Aviator Field.
