Strong Shooting Leads to Win For Men’s Basketball over John Jay

BOX SCORE
JAMAICA, N.Y. – The York College men's basketball shot over 50 percent from the field and defeated John Jay College Friday night, 94-82, after a strong team effort on the offensive end.

It was a tightly contested first half for both teams, leading to a 21-21 tie at the 9:17 mark of the first half. It looked like neither team would be able to take control of the game.
The score would remain close until York was able to build an eight-point lead around the four-minute mark of the first half, after two made free-throws from Omar St. John, who went into the half with 13 points—seven of which came from the charity stripe.

Two big baskets by Michael Woods, minutes later, allowed York to keep extend their lead another point, and go into the second half up 46-37.

John Jay started the second half with two three-point shots, one from Kris Owens, the other from Korede Griffith, closing the gap to just five points. However, Woods would help extend their lead to 10 points after making four free-throw shots, two of which came from a technical foul. York would continue to extend their lead to as many as 24 points.

Woods would finish with a game-high 30 points, while two other York players, Jaron Williams (19 points) and Omar St. John (17 points) scored in double digits. Williams led the team in both blocks, with five, and rebounds with nine.  James Wolf added eight points, nine boards and two blocks off the bench.

Owens led his team in scoring with 23 points, followed by Griffith, who added 17. Foul trouble plagued John Jay for most of the night, leading to York attempting 42 free-throws, 33 of which they made.

This victory improves York's record to 13-7,8-3 CUNYAC, while John Jay drops to 8-12, 6-6 CUNYAC.  York will go on the road to take on CCNY this coming Monday at 7 p.m.
