Muirhead’s Big Night Not Enough as York Falls to Berkeley

Muirhead Scores 15, Grabs 25 Boards in Loss

BOX SCORE
JAMAICA, N.Y.— York College junior Stayce Kay Muirhead scored 15 points and pulled down 25 rebounds, but her impressive effort would be in vain, as the Cardinals women's basketball team fell to Berkeley College (NY), 64-55.

Muirhead matched both her single-game career highs on the night and 12 of her rebounds were on the offensive end. She also shot 7-of-13 from the field and had four steals.

But as a team, York could not overcome a poor offensive night.  The Cardinals shot 35 percent from the field and just 50 percent from the free throw line.  York also committed 23 turnovers on the night.  The Cardinals did have a large, 51-28 rebounding advantage—thanks in part to Muirhead—but they could not convert enough of those second chance points.  Despite the large rebounding advantage, York had just four more second-chance points than Berkeley. Meanwhile, Berkeley did a better job of handling the ball and was 19-of-21 from the free throw line (90.5 percent).

The two teams went back and forth in the first half, with York going into the locker room with a narrow, 26-24 cushion.  But Berkeley began to pick it up early in the second half.  With the score tied, the Knights went on an 8-0 run, thanks to some strong outside shooting.  Three-pointers by the Knight's Janay Thomas and Aiyesha Brown helped propel the run and give Berkeley a 36-28 lead with 15 minutes remaining.

Berkeley never relinquished the lead from that point.  York closed to within two points on two different occasions but the Knights were able to pull away each time.  Another 8-0 run by Berkeley put the Knights up by ten (52-42) with just 4:34 to play.  York never threatened after that point.

Berkeley was led by Brown, who had a game-high 24 points, to go along with seven rebounds.  Thomas added 13 points and seven steals.

Also chipping in for York in the loss was Angelika Ruggiano, who had 16 points and seven assists.  Shauncia McClendon had ten rebounds and Danielle Dunn had nine points.

Berkeley improves to 11-3, while York drops to 2-15.  The Cardinals will visit Baruch College on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
