Men’s Volleyball Falls to #10 NYU and #1 Springfield in Season Opener

SPRINGFIELD, M.A.— The York College men's volleyball team had a tough test in its 2014 season opener, as they took on #10 New York University, as well as defending national champion and top-ranked Springfield College in a tri-match on Saturday.  The Cardinals lost 3-1 (20-25, 25-20, 25-17, 25-15) to NYU and 3-0 (25-7, 25-14, 25-14) to Springfield.
 
NYU Recap
York looked strong in the early parts of the match as they took the opening set.  After going back and forth initially, York went on a 6-1 run to take a 17-11 lead.  The Cardinals then held off NYU the rest of the way to take a 1-0 advantage. 
 
But NYU evened things up in the second.  The two teams went back and forth again in the set until late when the Violets pulled away.  The Cardinals came up short, despite hitting a match-high .467 in the set.  However, NYU had the advantage in the service department, serving up four aces to none for York. 
 
But the third and fourth sets were all NYU.  The Violets hit .368 and .391 in the third and fourth sets respectively, while holding York to a negative hitting percentage in the third and just a .043 percentage in the fourth. 
 
In the loss, York was led by Sebastien Francois, who had seven kills and hit .600, while also adding a team-high five digs.  Leszek Stankiewicz also had seven kills, hit .385 and blocked three attempts.  Randy Adams added six kills and three blocks and Bryan Williams recorded a team-high eight digs.
 
NYU was led by Chase Klein, who had a match-high 13 kills, and by Colin LaPorted, who notched 12 kills.
 
Springfield Recap
Springfield dominated play and showed why they are the #1 ranked team in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) pre-season poll. The Pride held the Cardinals to a negative hitting percentage for the match and limited York to just 14 kills on the evening. 
 
Springfield hit .429 on the night and recorded 27 digs.  Greg Woods led the way with ten kills and just one hitting error (.600).  Angel Perez had five kills and hit .714.
 
Adams had a team-high five kills for the Cardinals and Stankiewicz finished with six digs and two blocks.
 
York (0-2) will host Mt. Ida and NYU-Poly next Saturday, February 1 beginning at 10 a.m.
