Woods, St. John and Williams Lead York to Victory over NYU-Poly

York Wins its 8th Straight

BOX SCORE
BROOKLYN, N.Y.— Michael Woods, Omar St. John and Jaron Williams combined to scored 69 points to lead the York College men's basketball team to a 91-82 triumph over New York University-Polytechnic on Monday afternoon.

Omar St. John scored 25 points, Jaron Williams finished with a career-high 24 points and 17 rebounds and Michael Woods netted 20 points, as York won its eighth straight game.  Combined their effort was enough to overshadow the near-perfect performance of NYU-Poly's Brendan Gallagher.  Gallagher scored a game-high 30 points, while also grabbing nine rebounds and dishing out seven assists.  He was 9-of-10 from the field, 6-of-6 from three-point range and 10-of-10 from the free throw line.

Though the game was close for the majority of the contest, York only trailed for a total of 22 seconds—which came early in the first half.  The Cardinals held a modest five-point lead (34-29) with 5:29 to play in the opening half but finished the half strong, thanks in part to an 8-2 run that put the Cardinals up, 42-31 at the 3:12 mark.  They would eventually go into the locker room with a nine-point advantage.

In the second half, York continued to keep the Blue Jays at bay, holding a three-possession or larger lead for the majority of time.  Poly made a late run to close within six points (79-73) after Ed Klementowicz drained a three for the Blue Jays.  But York would not be denied; as St. John followed with six unanswered points to put the Cardinals back up by 12 (85-73) with 1:47 left.  The Cardinals cruised to the finish line from there.

NYU-Poly falls to 2-13 with the loss, while York improves to 11-5.  The Cardinals will have their biggest game of the season to this point on Wednesday.  York visits the College of Staten Island, who is 7-0 and sits in first place in the CUNYAC standings.  York is just behind them in second place and could take over first with a victory.  Tip-off is 7:30 p.m.
