Women’s Basketball Falls to Lehman Despite Strong Shooting

BOX SCORE
JAMAICA, N.Y.— Despite shooting well and winning the rebounding battle, the York College women's basketball team came out on the losing end of a CUNY Athletic Conference contest against Lehman College, losing 101-71.

The Cardinals shot 41.9 percent from the field—its second highest percentage of the season—and outrebounded Lehman, 56-49, but came up short in other major areas of the game.

The biggest reason for the loss was the Cardinals' poor free throw shooting.  York went to the line 41 times in the game but managed to make just 16 of those (39 percent).  Turnovers also were a big factor, as the Cardinals gave the ball away 35 times on the afternoon.  Conversely Lehman shot an impressive 86.7 percent from the charity stripe (26-30) and had 15 turnovers.

Lehman had a total team effort in the victory, with five players reaching double figures in points.  Leading the way was Amel Del Rosario, who had a monster game, with 30 points, three assists and four steals.  Amani Lightbourne added 21 points and 12 boards.

In the loss, York was led by Angelika Ruggiano, who matched her career-high in points with 19, while also dishing out six assists.  Kiera Burns finished with 17 points and Stayce Kay Muirhead added a double-double with 13 points and 16 rebounds.

Lehman improves to 11-6 overall and 5-3 in the CUNYAC, while York drops to 2-13, 1-7 CUNYAC.  York will return to action on Wednesday with a road game against Staten Island. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
