John Jay Rallies to Top Women’s Basketball

NEW YORK, N.Y.— The York College women's basketball team led by as many as ten points in the first half but were outplayed in the second half and lost to John Jay College, 82-69 on Monday night.
 
Things looked promising for York in the early going, as the Cardinals opened up a 19-9 lead, nine minutes into the game.  Two made three-pointers by Angelika Ruggiano and another by Nia Rene helped give the Cardinals the early advantage.  
 
 York continued to nurse the lead through most of the first half as John Jay slowly chipped into the lead. The Bloodhounds gained the lead at the 1:48 mark (29-28) on the strength of good free throw shooting.   John Jay went to the line 23 times in the first half alone and made 18 attempts (78.3%). They held a slight, 33-30 lead going into halftime.
 
Things went south for York in the second half rather quickly, however.  A 22-3 run by the Bloodhounds to start the second half gave them a 55-33 lead with 13:32 to play in the game.  The Cardinals could get no closer than nine points the rest of the way.    
 
John Jay continued to get to the free throw line at an astounding rate.  The Bloodhounds went to the line 31 more times in the second half, which made for a total of 54 in the game.  John Jay had 37 of its points by free throws.  By contrast, York only took 26 free throws on the night and made 13. 
 
The Bloodhounds were led by Jamecia Forsythe, who scored 17 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, swatted four shots and had five steals.  Tyana Hale added a team-high 18 points and Amanda Jimenez recorded a double-double, with 14 points and 12 boards. 
 
York was led by Ruggiano, who finished with a game-high 19 points.  Rene and Danielle Dunn each had 12 points and Aveiann Roland chipped in ten points, five boards and three assists.
 
York falls to 1-11, 0-6 CUNYAC, while John Jay improves to 5-8, 3-4 CUNYAC.  The Cardinals will return to action on Wednesday when they host Medgar Evers College at 6 p.m.
