NEW YORK, N.Y.— The York College men's basketball team overcame a sluggish start and picked up its fifth straight victory, defeating John Jay College, 80-68, on Monday night.
The Cardinals needed a total team effort to get the victory and they got contributions from a number of people.
Michael Woods, the reigning CUNYAC Player of the Week, netted a game-high 28 points on 10-of-17 shooting.
Omar St. John finished with 18 points and four assists and
Du'Quan Lawson netted 11 points, to go along with six assists and three steals.
Jaron Williams was a force down low, as he scored nine points, pulled down 13 rebounds and blocked a season-high five shots.
York had its shooting struggles in the early going, scoring just six points in the first seven minutes of play and trailed, 15-6. John Jay held the lead for the majority of the half, but a 15-0 run by the Cardinals helped erase the deficit and put York up by ten points, 29-19 with 6:05 left before halftime. Woods nearly accounted for the run all by himself, as he scored 13 of the 15 points in the stretch and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the field, including a made three-pointer.
The Cardinals never relinquished the lead from there but the Bloodhounds kept it interesting in the second half. York led by as many as 14 in the second half but John Jay briefly closed to within four—62-58—with 5:20 to play, following a 9-0 run.
But York was able to quell the run thanks to a three-pointer by
Donald Rodriguez on the following possession. The Cardinals then scored on the next two possessions to go back up by double digits. They never looked back from there.
In the loss, John Jay was led by Korede Griffith, who finished with 17 points and by Kris Owens who recorded 16 points. The Bloodhounds fall to 6-8 overall and 4-3 in CUNYAC play.
York now stands at 8-5 overall and 5-1 in CUNYAC play. The Cardinals will return to action on Wednesday when they host Medgar Evers College at 8 p.m. Admission to the game is free!
