EWING N.J. – The York College men's soccer team overcame a 2-0 deficit late in the match against a talented College of New Jersey team, but eventually fell in overtime, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon.
TCNJ, who played to a draw against the third-ranked team in NCAA Division III earlier this year, looked they might run away with the match early. TCNJ's Kevin Shaw put the Lions on the board at the 7:58 mark, when he took a long feed from teammate Nick Costelloe. He raced past the defense and slotted a left-footed shot into the right corner.
The score stayed the same until just after halftime, when the Lions' Dan McMillan McMillan served a cross from the endline and Costelloe caught the first-timer square to give TCNJ a two-goal advantage. They continued to pressure the York defense, but Cardinals keeper
Shady Mohamed played extremely well in the second half to keep their hopes alive.
York finally broke through in the 76th minute when
Rohan Burrell re-directed a cross from
Oluwaseun Ogundele into the top of the net to make it a 2-1 game.
Then with just over four minutes to play, Ogundele was taken down in the box and rippled the back of the net off a PK for the equalizer.
But the late comeback was all for naught as TCNJ's Sean Etheridge scored the game-winner with 3:12 to go in the first overtime. Etheridge blasted a shot that was initially stopped by Mohamed, but the ball trickled over the goal line, as the Lions (4-1-1) broke into celebration.
With the loss, York drops to 1-3 on the year. They will look to rebound from the tough defeat when they host St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) at 4:30 p.m. at Aviator Sports Complex.
