Men’s Volleyball Closes out Regular Season With Losses to #7 Baruch and # 4 Stevens

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The York College men's volleyball team fell short against top conference rival #7 Baruch College, losing 3-1 (25-16, 25-16, 23-25, 25-14), while also dropping its regular season finale later in the day by a score of 3-1 (25-13, 25-17, 25-11) to #4 Stevens Institute of Technology.
 
In the first match of the day, Baruch (30-5, CUNYAC 14-0) came out strong, taking a 2-0 set lead but York battled back for a narrow 25-23 third-set win. In the fourth set, the Bearcats regrouped and won in convincing fashion, securing a perfect 14-0 CUNYAC record to end the season.
 
In fitting fashion on Senior Day, Aviv Elias pounded eight kills to go along with three aces, while Gabe Rivera added eight digs, to go along with nine kills in their final collegiate regular season match. Steven Coniglio led the attack with 10 kills, hitting .643 with four blocks. Scott Standring dished out a match-high 37 assists and collected five digs.
 
In the loss, York was lead by Edner Geffrard, who slammed 12 kills, while adding nine digs and two blocks. Leszek Stankiewicz had 12 kills of his own to go with his two blocks and two digs. Avinash Thomas also supplied seven kills with his nine digs, while Jon Peter Sardea contributed a team-high 21 assists.
 
In the second match of the day Stevens (23-7), the fourth-ranked team in Division III, was just too strong.  The Ducks went a perfect 15 kills on 15 attempts in the first set while holding the Cardinals to a .125 hitting percentage. They continued their strong play in the second and third sets, hitting .455 and .500 respectfully. 
 
Edner Geffrard again led the Cardinal offense with eight kills. Leszek Stankiewicz added five kills and a match-high six digs.
 
York finishes the regular season with a record of 22-14.  They will host Lehman College in the quarterfinal round of the CUNYAC Championships on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
