BELLEROSE, N.Y. – After trailing in both game one and two, the York College softball team mounted a rally in the final inning of each game against John Jay College, bringing the winning run to the plate, but could not get the big hit either time. York lost game one, 7-4, and game two, 4-3.
In the first game, John Jay scratched across a run in the second, third and fifth innings to take a 3-0 advantage. In the bottom of the fifth, York missed the first of many golden scoring opportunities on the day. The Cardinals loaded the bases with two outs after a Kimberley Barnes single and walks by Meriem Alahaine and
Karen Werner. But John Jay pitcher, Lana Kovac, struck out the next batter to work out of trouble.
In the top of the sixth, the Bloodhounds looked to have put the game away after a four-run outburst gave them a 7-0 cushion. A run-scoring triple by Kalyss Daley and an RBI double by Ash Kersting highlighted the big inning.
York did not go quietly though. In the bottom half of the inning, an RBI double by Barnes brought home the Cardinals first run of the day and an RBI groundout by Alahaine made it 7-2. Then in the bottom of the seventh, York put two runners on to start a rally.
Thessaly Belizario then lined a single, which got by the leftfielder, allowing two runners to score and making the score, 7-4. Consecutive walks then loaded the bases, bringing the winning run to the plate. But once again, Kovac worked out of trouble, getting Alahaine to fly out to center to end the game.
Game two was a pitcher's duel throughout as Kovac and Belizario were both on their games on the mound. The Bloodhounds scored a run off a wild pitch in the first and pushed across an unearned run in the fifth to take a 2-0 advantage. John Jay then added two more in the sixth to take a seemingly comfortable 4-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh.
However, after being silenced the entire game, York finally broke through in the final inning. With two outs and a runner on,
Geneva Faulk doubled to keep the inning alive.
Danielle Dunn then came to the plate and grounded to third base. However, a wild throw by the third basemen, allowed Dunn to reach and two runs to score. Belizario then followed with a triple in the right centerfield gap to score Dunn and close the deficit to 4-3. For a third time though, Kovac was able to escape a major jam as she struck out
Shanelle Baldwin to end the game and strand the tying run at third base.
With the two losses, York drops to 3-12, 0-4 in CUNY Athletic Conference play. John Jay improves to 5-6-1 and 4-4 in the CUNYAC. York will return to action next Wednesday, when they host Lehman College at Padavan-Preller Field in Bellerose at 3:30 p.m.
