Men’s Volleyball Falls Short Against Hunter but Rebounds to Top St. Joseph’s

JAMAICA, N.Y.— The York College men's volleyball team fell short in a key conference game against Hunter College, losing 3-0 (28-25, 25-12, 25-23) before bouncing back in its second match of the night to defeat St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) 3-0 (25-11, 25-9, 25-11).
 
York had its chances against Hunter College, who sit just head of the Cardinals in second place in the CUNYAC standings.  The Cardinals looked strong in the opening set and earned three set points after taking a 24-21 lead. But the Cardinals could not convert any of the three set points and the Hawks evened the score at 24-24.  After going back and forth from there, Hunter finally broke through and took the set 28-26. 
 
In the second set, York struggled to get back on track after the heartbreaking loss in the first set.  The miscues added up as the Cardinals hit -.129, which allowed the Hawks to easily take the second set, 25-12. 
 
The Cardinals got back to playing good volleyball in the third as the two teams traded points most of the way.  York hit .333 in the set but Hunter was even better, as they hit .419 and narrowly won the set, 25-23. 
 
In the loss, York was led by Leszek Stankiewicz, who finished with nine kills, nine digs and two blocks.  Edner Geffrard added eight kills and Kenan Kajtezovic and Sebastien Francois each added seven kills.  Avinash Thomas pitched in 17 assists, six kills and five digs.
 
Hunter was led by Matthew Ng, who had a match-high ten kills with a .324 hitting percentage and Nino Hot, who had nine kills. The Hawks improve to 13-13 and 12-2 in CUNYAC play.
 
In the second match of the night, St. Joseph's was no match for York, as they Cardinals cruised to the win.  The Cardinals hit .293 for the match, while holding the Bears to a negative hitting percentage. Stankiewicz had another big game for York, slamming ten kills and hitting .316. Maximo Bonilla finished with nine kills, a .471 hitting percentage, six digs and two assists.  Kevin Mora had five kills and six digs and Sebastien Francois added five kills, hit .500 and picked up four digs.
 
York now stands at 22-12, 9-3 in the CUNYAC. They will take on Baruch College and Stevens Institute as part of a tri-match on Saturday at Baruch beginning at 10:30 a.m.
