COBLESKILL, N.Y. – The York College softball team lost a pair of wild games when they took the trip to Cobleskill on Friday afternoon. The Cardinals lost game one, 11-2 and then were edged, 15-13, in the nightcap.
Pitching and defense were lacking for the Cardinals in both games. Cobleskill combined for 25 hits in the doubleheader and York compounded the scoring by committing a combined seven errors.
In game one, the Fighting Tigers held a 3-2 lead in the third when they broke open the game with an eight-run frame. They knocked eight hits in the innings, including four doubles.
Cobleskill had five players with a multi-hit effort in game one, led by Julia Lull, who went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. York's
Joviette Frederick accounted for most of the Cardinals offense, going 3-for-3 with a run scored.
Game two was a slugfest as Cobleksill quickly jumped ahead 9-1 after a nine-run bottom of the first. But York had a nine-running inning of its own in the top of the third, and took a 10-9 lead. With two outs and a run in, York put up seven straight hits and only saw the inning end with an out on the base paths. Frederick had the big knock in the inning with a two-run double and
Karen Werner and
Meriem Alahiane also had RBI doubles in the frame.
But the Cardinals lead would be short-lived. The Fighting Tigers pushed across a run in the third, and then had another big inning in the fifth, plating five more runs.
With the score 15-12 in the bottom of the seventh, the Cardinals tried to rally, pushing another run across, but Cobleskill was able to escape further trouble and close out the game.
Danielle Dunn led York in game two, going 4-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
Thessaly Belizario was 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. All but one player for York had at least one hit and every player scored at least one run. Cobleskill was led by Kelsey DeZalla and Madelline DeMillo, who both had three hits.
The Fighting Tigers improve to 12-8, while York drops to 3-18. The Cardinals will visit Sarah Lawrence College on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
