NEW YORK, N.Y. – The York College men's volleyball team saw its exciting playoff run come up a bit short as they lost to Baruch College in the 2013 CUNY Athletic Conference Championship on Friday evening. The #7 Bearcats won by a score of 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-10) to win their fifth straight CUNYAC title and earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.
Baruch (33-5) came out clicking on all cylinders in the first set, playing nearly flawless volleyball. The Bearcats hit an astounding .565, committing just one error, while dominating on defense, blocking three attempts and recording 15 digs.
York (24-15) picked up play in the second and kept it close throughout. The Bearcats held a small lead for most of the set. With Baruch leading 20-16, the Cardinals rolled off three straight points to close to within one point (20-19). The pivotal point of the set followed as a long rally ensued with the Bearcats pulling out the point. They took off from there and took the second set, 25-20.
In the final set, the Cardinals seemed to run out of gas, perhaps worn out from the five-set victory in the semifinals earlier in the evening. The Cardinals struggled mightily in the set and Baruch took advantage, winning 25-10 to clinch the title.
Baruch was led by Jack McKee, who slammed a match-high 13 kills and hit .571 en route to being named the tournament's MVP. Brady Ambro recorded ten kills and 11 digs, while hitting .500 and setter Scott Standring finished with 29 assists.
York was led by
Leszek Stankiewicz, who had six kills and two blocks.
Edner Geffrard added five kills and seven digs. Geffrard, along with
Avinash Thomas were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Despite the loss, York's season may not be over. They will hope to receive a bid to the Eastern College Athletic Conference Tournament. Those seedings will be announced on Monday.
