Men’s Volleyball Holds on for Win over CCNY

BOX SCORE
NEW YORK, N.Y.— The York College men's volleyball team gutted out a hard-fought, 3-1 (22-25, 25-20, 25-17, 25-21) victory over conference-rival, City College of New York on Wednesday evening at the Nat Holman Gymnasium in Harlem.

York looked to be in some trouble as they dropped the first set 25-22 and were caught in a back-and-forth contest for most of the second set.  But with the score tied at 12-12 in the second, the Cardinals rattled off seven out of eight points to take a 19-13 advantage.  The stretch would help propel them to a second-set win.  The third and fourth sets were also close, but York was able to pull away late both times to win the match.

The Cardinals strong defensive effort was the key to victory, as they recorded a season-high 53 digs in the match.  Three players recorded double figures in digs, led by Terrence Sutton and Avinash Thomas, who each had 14.  Thomas was also a force on offense, slamming nine kills and hitting .412.  Sebastien Francois finished with a match-high 11 kills and Edner Geffrard added six kills, ten digs and five blocks.  Leszek Stankiewicz recorded eight kills and five solo blocks.

CCNY was led by Derell Williams, who had 11 kills and hit .333.  The Beavers drop to 9-13, 4-7 in CUNYAC play.

York (19-11, 7-2 CUNYAC) will return to action on March 27 when they host Brooklyn College at 7:00 p.m.
