Five-Run Fifth Inning Propels York Softball to Comeback Win over Purchase
BOX SCORE
BELLEROSE, N.Y. – On a cold and snowy day, the York College softball team overcame a 6-1 deficit after scoring five runs in the fifth inning and another three runs in the sixth to defeat Purchase College, 9-6, in the 2013 home opener at Padavan-Preller Field.
The Cardinals found themselves in a 6-1 hole after the Panthers plated four runs in the third inning and two runs in the fifth. In the fourth inning, Purchase scored all its runs with two outs. Alexandria Prescia brought home two runs with a single and pitcher Christine Leo helped her own cause with a two-run home run.
York could only manage one run through the first four innings, which came in the third on a RBI-triple by centerfielder
Karen Werner.
In the bottom of the fifth, York loaded the bases with one out.
Joviette Frederick brought the first run of the inning home on a ground ball that was booted by the second basemen. Purchase followed by recording the second out on a force play at home.
Shortstop
Geneva Faulk then came to the plate and lined a single down the left field line. Prescia, who was playing leftfield, let the ball get by her, which cleared the bases and allowed Faulk to come all the way around to score the tying run.
In the bottom of the sixth, York loaded the bases again after three straight walks. Werner then followed with an RBI single to plate the go-ahead run. The next batter was Frederick who hit a fly ball to center field that was dropped, which allowed two more runs to score.
In the top of the seventh, York pitcher
Priscilla Lallave loaded the bases, which brought the go-ahead run to the plate with two outs. However, she was able to induce a groundout to end the game.
Lallave, a freshman, earned the first win of her career after going the distance. Werner was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored and
Geneva Faulk was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI.
York improves to 1-4, while Purchase drops to 0-2. The Cardinals were scheduled to play a doubleheader against Purchase but the snowy conditions forced the game to be called in the third inning before it was official. York will return to action on Thursday when they visit the College of New Rochelle at 4:00 p.m.
