Men’s Volleyball Falls to #14 MIT and Johnson & Wales

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The York College men's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches during the first day of the Johnson & Wales University Tournament on Friday.  The Cardinals fell to #14 Massachusetts Institute of Technology 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-20) in their first match and later lost to host Johnson & Wales in four by a score of 3-1 (17-25, 25-23, 25-20, 25-13).
 
MIT (16-11) showed why they are nationally ranked as they held the Cardinals to their second lowest hitting percentage of the year (.025).  MIT used a balanced attack, with three players registering six kills or more. Patrick Vatterott led the way with seven kills and a .750 hitting percentage.
 
York's Sebastien Francois finished with a match-high ten kills and Leszek Stankiewicz and Edner Geffrard each chipped in five kills apiece.
 
Against Johnson & Wales (7-9), York dominated the first set, hitting .261 compared to .000 for Johnson & Wales en route to winning 25-17.  The second set went back and forth throughout and York took a 22-21 advantage late, needing just three more points to take a commanding lead. But Johnson & Wales finished with four of the next five points to even up the match.  They then took off from there, taking the next two sets to defeat the Cardinals for the second time this season.
 
Emmanuel Geffrard had a big match, finishing with 13 kills and eight digs, while Francois slammed ten kills. Big brother Edner Geffrard added eight kills, seven digs and two blocks and libero Terrence Sutton had eight digs.
 
York drops to 17-9 on the season with the two losses.  They will take on Daniel Webster College and Wentworth Institute on Saturday.
