Men’s Basketball Struggles Offensively in Loss to CCNY
BOX SCORE
JAMAICA, N.Y.— The York College men's basketball struggled to get anything going from the field or the free throw line and were held to its lowest point total of the season, losing to the City College of New York by a score of 50-47 on Monday night at the York College Gymnasium.
It was not the prettiest of games as both teams played sloppy at times. Each team committed 22 turnovers on the night. York shot just 37 percent on the night but more importantly, shot just 57 percent (12-for-21) from the free throw line. The nine missed free throws would loom large towards the end of the game.
Despite their struggles, York still led for most of the first half and had a four-point advantage (30-26) with 13:50 left in the game. But a 14-1 run by CCNY over the next five minutes put the Beavers on top 40-31 with 8:36 to go.
York started to pick things up towards the end of the game and closed to within one point with ten seconds remaining after lay-ups by
Du'Quan Lawson and
Jaron Williams on consecutive possessions made it 48-47. A York foul sent CCNY's Paul Dail to the free throw line for a one-and-one. Dail missed the shot and York grabbed the rebound with 8 ticks left on the clock. York had to bring the ball up court and CCNY pressured the ball. The Cardinals struggled to get it up the court and turned it over with four seconds left. A flagrant foul was called after the turnover and that would seal the game for the Beavers.
York got 14 points from
Tony Vails and saw a nice effort from
Jaron Williams, who finished with ten points and nine rebounds. Jordan Ortega led the Beavers with 17 points and seven boards. Terence Johnston had ten points and seven rebounds.
CCNY improves to 9-13, 5-9 in the CUNYAC, while York drops to 9-13, 5-8 in the CUNYAC. The Cardinals will look to rebound on Wednesday when they visit Hunter College at 7:00 p.m.
