11-0 Run in Second Half Propels Men’s Basketball to Win over John Jay

BOX SCORE
JAMAICA, N.Y. – An 11-0 run midway through the second half, helped propel the York College men's basketball team to a key, 70-63, victory over CUNY Athletic Conference foe, John Jay College on Saturday evening.

After trailing for the first 32 minutes of the contest, York went on an 11-0 run that took the score from a five-point deficit (52-47) to a six-point advantage (58-52).  Shamir Wilkinson and Tony Vails were instrumental during the stretch as the two combined for all 11 points.  From there, the Cardinals never looked back, as they never relinquished the lead and extended its advantage to as many as ten points in the final minutes of play.

The run helped overcome a difficult first half that saw the Cardinals trail by as many as 14 points.  York shot just 26 percent in the first half (6-for-23), which put them in the first-half hole.  They shot slightly better in the second half (33 percent) but it was a large free throw disparity that helped York come back to win the game.  York was sent to the line 35 times, making 26 of those, while John Jay took just 12 trips to the charity stripe.

Vails went to the line 12 times and made all 12 free throws. He finished with 19 points and four assists.  Wilkinson had one of the best games of his four-year career, scoring 24 points, which is two shy of his career-high, while also swatting a career-high seven blocks and grabbing eight rebounds.  He eclipsed 900 career points with his effort and now has 907 for his career.  Michael Trowers chipped in nine points off the bench and Thomas Hart added eight.

John Jay was led by Jamar Harry, who scored 13 points and grabbed ten boards, and by Isaih Holman, who finished with 14 points.  The Bloodhounds drop to 13-9, 9-4 on the season.  Two of their conference losses are to the Cardinals.

York is now 9-12 and 5-7 in the CUNYAC.  They move into a tie for fifth place in the conference standings and sit one game out of fourth place, which would assure them a home playoff game.

The Cardinals will host the City College of New York on Monday at 8:00 p.m. The game will be aired on Queens Public Television on tape delay at a time and date to be determined. Fans can also follow the game through live stats.
