Men’s Volleyball Tops Emerson but Drops Three Matches at MIT Invitational

CAMBRIDGE, M.A — The York College men's volleyball team spent its President's Day weekend up in Cambridge, MA for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Invitational. York finished 1-3 on the weekend, defeating Emerson College in five-set thriller, 3-2 (25-15, 13-25, 17-25, 25-21, 15-9) but losing three tightly-contested matches.
On Saturday, York started the day off with a tough task, facing #10 Rivier University. The Cardinals fought hard but came up short, losing 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-16). York was led by
Edner Geffrard, who made his 2013 debut, slamming a team-best seven kills, while recording eight digs. His younger brother Emmanuel finished with four kills and nine digs.
Leszek Stankiewicz added seven kills as well.
In their second match of the day, the Cardinals dropped a tough one to Lasell College 3-0 (25-13, 29-27, 28-26). After dropping the first set without much of a fight, York narrowly missed taking the second and third sets.
Edner Geffrard was once again the team-leader in kills, with 10. Libero
Terrence Sutton had a team-high 13 digs, while
Emmanuel Geffrard finished with five kills and 11 digs.
The Cardinals picked things up on Sunday morning, as they came back from a 2-1 set deficit to top Emerson College in five sets. Stankiewicz finished with 17 kills to pace York, while Edner Geffard slammed ten kills and had nine digs.
Jhonnattan Fernandez had five kills and eight digs and
Emmanuel Geffrard finished with 12 kills and nine digs.
Avinash Thomas (19 assists) and
Jon Peter Sardea (27 assists) split time at setter and each came up big for the Cardinals.
Looking for a split of its four matches, York came up a bit short, falling in four sets in the finale to Johnson and Wales College, 3-1 (25-16, 17-26, 25-22, 25-20). The Geffard brothers were dominant once again, as Edner registered 11 kills and six digs, while Emmanuel finished with ten kills and 12 digs. Stankiewicz and Fernandez both had nice games, putting down 11 and ten kills respectively.
For his effort, Edner Geffard was named to the MIT All-Tournament Team.
York (7-4) will visit John Jay College in its conference opener on Thursday at 6:00 p.m.
