Men’s Basketball Visits John Jay; Women’s Basketball Travels to Baruch for CUNYAC Quarterfinals

JAMAICA, N.Y.— The seeding for the 2013 CUNY/ Con Edison Basketball Championships were announced on Wednesday.  The York College men's basketball team will be visiting John Jay College on Sunday, February 17 at 4:00 p.m., while the women will head to Baruch College on Saturday, February 16 at 2:00 p.m.

The men's team is the #6 seed in the CUNYAC playoffs, while the women earned the eighth and final playoff spot.  If the men advance, they will play in the semifinals on Thursday night at the City College of New York against either Baruch or CCNY.  If the women advance they will also play at CCNY, but on Wednesday, against either John Jay College or Hunter College.

The men defeated John Jay (13-12, 9-7 CUNYAC) in both meetings this season but it wasn't easy.  The Cardinals pulled out an 82-81 victory over the Bloodhounds on January 4, before winning 70-63 on the road on February 2.  York has won the last six meetings against John Jay, dating back to 2008.  However, the last time the Bloodhounds defeated York came during the 2008 CUNYAC Championship game, when then sixth-seeded John Jay upset the top-seeded Cardinals to win the title.  This will be the first time these two teams have met in the playoffs since then.

John Jay will be paced by 2012-13 CUNYAC Player of the Year, Jamar Harry, who averaged 16.5 points and 8.1 boards per season. He put up 26 points against York on January 4 but was held to just 10 points in their second meeting.

York (11-14, 7-9 CUNYAC) will look to CUNYAC First-Team All-Star, Tony Vails to carry them.  Vails led the conference in scoring this season, averaging 21.7 points, while shooting .516 from the field.  Vails netted 26 points on January 4 against John Jay and finished with 19 in the second meeting.

The women will have their work cut out for them as they take on a Baruch College team that ranks #24 in the nation.  They finished the regular season with a record of 23-2 overall and 15-1 in CUNYAC play.  They are led by CUNYAC Player of the Year, Jessica Duleba who has averaged 15.4 points and 8.1 rebounds this season.

York (3-22, 3-13 CUNYAC) will need big games from Ishonda McFarland and Stayce Kay Muirhead in order to pull off the upset. McFarland leads the team in scoring, averaging 13.8 points per game, while Muirhead leads the team and is 18th in NCAA Division II with 11.5 rebounds per game.
