Men’s Basketball Gets Past Lehman With Strong Defensive Play
BOX SCORE
BRONX, N.Y. – The York College men's basketball team closed the 2012-13 regular season on Tuesday with a 70-63 win over Lehman College. York forced 21 turnovers, which they converted into 21 points to overcome a difficult shooting night.
York did not light it up on offense, shooting just 33 percent from the field and 20 percent from three-point range. But the 21 turnovers they forced, combined with the ability to get to the free throw line helped propel the Cardinals to victory.
In what has been a strong point for York this season, the Cardinals positive free throw disparity proved to be key. York made 34 trips to the charity stripe, making 21, while Lehman only had 23 trips, making 14. That would prove to be the difference in the ball game.
York trailed by four points at halftime but picked up its play in the second half, and was able to seal the win after 10-1 run late in the game.
Tony Vails netted 25 points to finish the season as the CUNYAC's leading scorer (21.7 ppg).
Shamir Wilkinson picked up a double-double, with 12 points and 12 rebounds and
Michael Trowers finished with 11.
Jose Arroyo also chipped in ten points and
Du'Quan Lawson nabbed seven steals.
Lehman was led by Quaseem Weems, who had a great game in a losing effort, scoring 24 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. Lehman finishes the season with a record of 7-18, 2-14 in the CUNYAC.
York (11-14, 7-9 CUNYAC) has earned the sixth seed in the CUNYAC Championships. York will visit John Jay College on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. in the quarterfinal round.
