York Women’s Basketball Dominates in Win over Medgar Evers

JAMAICA, N.Y.— The York College women's basketball team opened up its game against Medgar Evers College on a 23-0 run and never looked back, cruising to a 78-28 victory over the Cougars on senior day Sunday afternoon.
The Cardinals were dominant on both sides of the ball, forcing 31 turnovers on defense, while holding the Cougars to just 16 percent shooting. York shot a season-high 48 percent percent from the field and also recorded a season-high in points.
The Cardinals were led by
Ishonda McFarland, who finished with 17 points and six rebounds.
Angelika Ruggiano netted 15 points and
Shanelle Baldwin chipped in ten points.
Stayce Kay Muirhead finished with nine points and pulled down 10 rebounds. All but one York player found the bottom of the net.
Medgar Evers was led by Nia Tompkins, who scored 75 percent of her team's points, finishing with a game-high 21 points, while connecting on six three-pointers.
Prior to the contest, seniors McFarland and
Alicia Lee were honored for their contributions to the program. Both players were playing in their final home game at the York College Gymnasium.
York, winners of two straight, improve to 3-21, 3-12 in the CUNY Athletic Conference. Medgar Evers drops to 0-25, 0-15 in the CUNYAC. The Cardinals will close out the regular season at Lehman College on Tuesday. Tip-off for that game is slated for 5:30 p.m. Fans can follow that contest through live stats.
