Men’s Basketball Edged by NYU, 64-61

BOX SCORE
NEW YORK, N.Y.—The York College men's basketball team was edged by New York University, 64-61, in a non-conference contest on Sunday afternoon.

The game was closely played throughout and the result was still in question on the final possession.  York held a nine-point lead (52-43) following two straight Donald Rodriguez there-pointers with 9:56 to play in the game.  But the Cardinals lead would be short-lived as NYU responded with 13 consecutive points to take a 56-52 lead.  NYU scored on six of eight possessions during the stretch to earn the advantage.

The Violets (6-0) maintained the four-point lead until an Omar St. John lay-up and a Justin Garvin three-pointer on consecutives possessions gave the Cardinals a one-point, 62-61 lead with just 1:27 left.  But NYU quickly brought the ball up court on the next possession and got a dunk from Costis Gontikas to retake the lead. They got a stop and then scored again to go up by three points, 64-61, with 22 seconds to play.

On York's final possession, the Cardinals had three cracks at a game-tying three-pointer but were off the mark each time.  Time expired on the final miss, giving the Violets the narrow victory.

Michael Woods had a team-high 17 points to lead York, while St. John finished with 13 points and four assists. Terell Roper finished with 12 points.  NYU got a game-high 20 points from Evan Kupferberg and 12 points and eight boards from Gontikas.

The NYU defense was stifling, as they held York to 37.9 percent shooting and outrebounded the Cardinals, 46-28. York had just four second-chance points, while NYU had 16.   The Cardinals also shot just 55 percent from the charity stripe. They have shot under 60 percent in four of their five losses. Meanwhile, in their three victories, they are shooting 73 percent from the free throw line.

York will look to rebound on Tuesday when they host conference rival Brooklyn College at 8 p.m. Admission to the game is free!
