BOX SCORE
JAMAICA, N.Y.— The York College men's basketball team scored over 100 points for the first time in more than three years en route to defeating Vaughn College, 107-60 on Friday night.
The game was never in doubt with York beginning the game on an incredible, 24-0 run.
Michael Woods and
Omar St. John were a big reason for the fast start, as they combined to score 22 of the 24 points in the opening stretch. Vaughn regrouped to score six of the next eight points but the Cardinals were able to maintain that early 24-point advantage and took a 53-29 lead going into halftime.
24 points would be a close as Vaughn would get the rest of the way. An 18-8 run midway through the second half would push York's lead from 69-40 to 87-48. York would eventually reach 100 points on a
Terell Roper lay-up at the 3:33 mark. It was the first time the Cardinals reached 100 points since February 3, 2010 when York defeated the College of Staten Island, 102-61.
Woods, who came into the week ranked second in the NCAA in scoring, finished with a game-high 31 points and four assists. St. John filled up the stat sheet, with 20 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two steals. Roper chipped in 12 points and
Jaron Williams and
Donald Rodriguez each had ten. As a team, York shot an efficient 57.1 percent from the field, outrebounded Vaughn, 49-37 and forced 20 turnovers.
Michael Pena had 18 points for Vaughn and Jeffrey Noel finished with 16 to lead the Warriors.
The Cardinals improve to 3-4 with the victory, while Vaughn drops 5-2. York will visit NYU on Sunday at 1 p.m.
