Yeshiva is One Point Better Than York in Women’s Basketball

BOX SCORE
JAMAICA, N.Y.— In a game that came down to the final play, Yeshiva University edged the York College women's basketball team, 68-67, in a non-conference contest on Wednesday evening.

The game was about as close as it gets, with neither team leading by more than five points during any part of the game.  Yeshiva held the edge for the most of the game and held a narrow lead for most of the second half.

With 1:12 to play, the scored was tied at 64-64.  Yeshiva's Stephanie Greenburg came up big for the Maccabees on consecutive possessions.  She made a lay-up to put her team up by two points and then converted two free throws on the next possession to give Yeshiva a 68-64 lead with 40 seconds left.

Things were looking bleak for the Cardinals but Shanelle Baldwin dribbled up court on the next possession and drained a three-pointer to cut the deficit to one point with 33 seconds to go.

That play would then set up a wild finish.  With a three second differential between the shot clock and game clock, York elected not to foul, and the gamble paid off as they forced a turnover with 15 seconds left.

However on the ensuing possession, Baldwin was whistled for an offensive foul, giving the ball back to the Maccabees with only seven seconds to go.  But once again, York forced a turnover on the in-bounds pass. Kiera Burns, who got the steal, passed the ball up court to Baldwin who got off a running jumper.  The ball hit just off the rim and out.  Stayce Kay Muirhead grabbed the offensive rebound but she did not have time for a put back and Yeshiva celebrated the victory.

In the loss, Burns led the Cardinals with a game-high 23 points to go along with eight boards and five assists.  Angelika Ruggiano chipped in 15 points and Baldwin added ten points and eight assists.  Stayce Kay Muirhead led all players with 13 boards, while also scoring nine points.

Yeshiva's Julia Owens also netted a game-high 23 points with nine rebounds and Greenberg finished with 16 points.  The Maccabees improve to 3-4 with the victory.

York (0-6) will try for its first win on Friday when they host Vaughn College at 6 p.m.
