Staten Island Rallies to Top Women’s Volleyball in Four Sets

BOX SCORE
JAMAICA, N.Y.— The York College women's volleyball team got off to a promising start against the College of Staten Island, taking the first set, but the Dolphins rallied to win the next three sets and defeat the Cardinals by a score of 3-1 (24-26, 25-17, 25-19, 25-10).

In the final CUNYAC regular season contest, the Cardinals struck first as they won a back-and-forth first set.  With the score tied at 24-24, York benefitted from a CSI hitting error and then a NaaDira Patrick kill to clinch the set.

But from there, it was all CSI. The Dolphins jumped out to a 13-6 lead in the second set and never looked back to even it up at a set apiece. In the third set, York held a 12-4 lead after four straight kills.  However, the Dolphins regrouped after a timeout and scored the next five points to get back in the game.  They would eventually complete the comeback, taking a 16-15 lead after a kill by Pola Poskrobko.  They would not relinquish the lead from there.

With the momentum of their comeback win in the third set, the Dolphins cruised in the fourth, winning 25-10.  York really struggled in that final set, hitting -.217.

Despite the loss, York's Stayce Kay Muirhead had another stellar match, finishing with 13 kills and a .330 hitting percentage.  Allison Li added six kills and a team-high 14 digs.  Tiandra Jones and Patrick each had five kills, while Kiranjeet Kaur served up four aces on the night.

CSI was led by Siobhan Granich with nine kills and a .667 hitting percentage.  The Dolphins finish the 2013 season with a 3-20 overall record and a 1-7 CUNYAC mark.

York drops to 6-20 overall and wraps up CUNYAC play with a 2-6 record.  They are expected to be the sixth seed in the CUNYAC playoffs, which begin next Tuesday, November 5.  The pairings will be announced shortly.

The Cardinals will close out the regular season with a non-conference tri-match at Yeshiva.  York will take on Yeshiva at 11 a.m. and the College of Saint Elizabeth at 1:00 p.m.
