Brooklyn Scores Two Second-Half Goals to Top York in CUNY Quarterfinals

Cardinals' 2013 Season Ends With Tough Loss to Brooklyn

BOX SCORE
JAMAICA, N.Y.— The Brooklyn College Bulldogs rallied to score two second-half goals and defeated the York College men's soccer team, 2-1, in the quarterfinals of the 2013 CUNY Athletic Conference/ Applebee's Championships.  It was an intense match that featured many exciting plays, including a pair of penalty kicks in a three-minute span during the second half.

York broke through first, scoring in the 24th minute when Brian Broadbelt crossed the ball to Jahwun Marshall, who rifled a shot into the back of the net to give the Cardinals an early advantage.

But the pivotal part of the contest came during a three-minute stretch beginning in the 72nd minute.  A foul in the York goalie box gave the Bulldogs a penalty shot.  On the penalty kick, CUNYAC leading scorer Dmitry Prokofyev fired a shot into the top-right corner for the equalizer.

Then shortly after, at 74:19, York was also fouled in the goalie box.  Senior Oluwaseun Ogundele kicked the ball to Brooklyn keeper Kamil Ostrowski's left.  Ostrowski made a sensational, diving stop to keep the score tied at 1-1.

Both teams picked up the intensity in the final minutes of action but it was the Bulldogs who came through, scoring in the 87th minute when Oleg Tykhonravov passed the ball to Kenny Benitez, just outside the goalie box. Benitez took a high shot towards York keeper Leszek Stankiewicz.  The ball hit off of Stankiewicz's hands and went into the net for the eventual game-winning goal.

Outside of that goal allowed, Stankiewicz played great in net, making ten saves on the afternoon, many of which required an outstanding effort.  Ostrowski made seven saves in goal for Brooklyn, none bigger than the stopped penalty kick.

Brooklyn now advances to the semifinals on Saturday where they will take on City College. York ends its season with a record of 6-11-1.
