John Jay Controls Second Half in Win over York Women’s Soccer
After Taking an Early Lead, York allows Three Unanswered Goals to Bloodhounds

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The York College women's soccer team controlled the action over John Jay College in the early-going but John Jay turned things around in the second half and defeated the Cardinals, 3-1 on Monday afternoon.
Things looked promising for York in the first half. The Cardinals won the possession battle in the first 45 minutes and outshot the Bloodhounds, 6-2. After 24 scoreless minutes, the Cardinals broke through to take an early lead. On a free kick,
Jessica Cornejo rifled a shot towards the John Jay goal, hitting the crossbar. The ball ricocheted towards
Anna Lales, who headed the ball in to give the Cardinals a 1-0 advantage.
The Bloodhounds caught a break in the 38th minute when a handball in the York goalie box gave them a penalty kick. Katelyn Davis converted the kick to even up the score.
At halftime, John Jay made adjustments to their game and they dominated played in the second half. The Bloodhounds held York without a shot, while getting off seven shots of their own. In the 52nd minute, they broke the tie when Davis found Jessica Jean on a corner kick, who headed in a goal to make it 2-1. Then in the 77th minute, Lilliana Bonilla gave John Jay an insurance goal.
With the loss, York drops to 2-12, 1-5 in the CUNY Athletic Conference and is now eliminated from playoff contention. John Jay improves to 4-12, 3-3 in the CUNYAC and has secured a playoff spot.
The Cardinals will host Yeshiva on Thursday night at 8:00 p.m. at Aviator Field.
