Walter Murray, York’s All-Time Leading Scorer, Passes Away
JAMAICA, N.Y.— On December 20, 2012, Walter Murray, the leading scorer in York College men's basketball history, passed away at the age of 57.
Murray played at York College from 1973-77, scoring a then City University of New York Athletic Conference record of 1,977 points. His record would stand until 1995 when Shawn McCartney of Hunter College surpassed him. He is still second all-time in CUNYAC history. He would go on to play professional basketball internationally in Australia for several years.
Murray earned a bachelor's degree in Psychology from York College and went on to work for the State of New York at the Kirby Forensic Psychiatric Center for 25 years. Murray was also a teammate of current Men's Basketball Coach and Athletic Director,
Ronald St. John.
“Not only was Walter a phenomenal basketball player but he was a really good friend,” said St. John. “He was the first guy to congratulate me when I became the head coach and he was always there to provide guidance. I will definitely miss him and will always remember him.”
Murray is survived by his wife, Gertrude, and his children, Walter and Christina.
