Men’s Volleyball Bounces NYU-Poly and Yeshiva in Straight Sets

JAMAICA, N.Y. – The York College men's volleyball team picked up its first two wins of the season and they did it with relative ease, defeating NYU-Polytechnic 3-0 (25-20, 25-3, 25-10) and Yeshiva University 3-0 (25-15, 25-11, 25-12).

After a tight first set that saw York win 25-20, the Cardinals turned it on in the second and third sets and won by big margins.
In the second set, with York already leading 10-2 and
Kevin Dong serving, the Cardinals scored nine straight points to go up 19-2. After allowing a point, they scored six more straight to close out the set. The Cardinals hit .647 and did not commit a single error in the second.
The third set was nearly as impressive as York hit .571 and committed just one hitting error. It started out close, with the Cardinals holding a narrow 10-8 lead. But York would eventually extend its lead to 15-10 and then closed out the match with ten straight points.
York was led by freshman
Avinash Thomas, who recorded a match-high 12 kills without a single error, while hitting .750. Freshman
Emmanuel Geffrard slammed ten kills, hit .500 and had three blocks, while sophomore
Francis Jimenez recorded six kills and three blocks. Sophomore setter
Jon Peter Sardea finished with 25 assists and five digs and junior libero
Terrence Sutton led all players with eight digs.
As a team, the Cardinals hit .354 and held NYU-Poly to a hitting percentage of -.186.
Yeshiva Recap
York cruised to victory once again in the nightcap, not allowing Yeshiva to score more than 15 points in any set. Once again, they held their opponent to a negative hitting percentage, as the Maccabees hit just -.106. Conversely, the Cardinals hit a strong, .321 in the match.
Emmanuel Geffrard finished with a match-high ten kills, while hitting .333 and recording four digs. Junior
Leszek Stankiewicz added seven kills, seven digs and two aces, while Thomas slammed nine kills and had three blocks. Sophomore
Kevin Mora was a force at the net, blocking five shots,.
Jhonnattan Fernandez had four kills and hit .444, while
Maximo Bonilla put down five kills and also hit .444
York now stands at 2-1 and will have a quick turnaround, as they will host two more games tomorrow. The Cardinals will play Keuka College at 7:00 p.m. and Cooper Union at approximately 8:30 p.m.
