Baruch Tops Men’s Basketball Thanks to Solid Three-Point Shooting

BOX SCORE
JAMAICA, N.Y.— Baruch College shot 53 percent from three-point range which helped propel them to a 70-65 win over the York College men's basketball team in a CUNY Athletic Conference contest on Wednesday night at the York College Gym.

It was a key game for seeding for both teams.  With the win Baruch improves to 14-6, 10-2 in CUNYAC play, while York drops to 8-12, 4-7 in the CUNYAC.  Baruch moves to within a half game of first place, while York drops to sixth in the conference standings.

After holding a narrow lead for most of the first half, Baruch went on an 11-2 run thanks to two three-pointers by the Bearcats' Rob Goldstein and another by Matt Feldman, which gave Baruch a 32-22 lead with 5:32 left.
York would finish the half strong though, closing on an 8-1 run, which was capped off by a made jumper at the buzzer by the Cardinals' Tony Vails. The score at halftime was 33-30 in favor of Baruch.  The Bearcats strong outside shooting was the key in their halftime lead, as they made five of nine shots from long distance (55 percent).

But York could not carry that momentum over in the early parts of the second half.  Baruch started the second half scoring the first six points to go back up by nine points (39-30).  A few minutes later, Baruch extended its lead to 13 points—its largest of the game—thanks to another three-point field goal by Goldstein.

The Cardinals clawed back into the game, closing to within six points (54-48) with 5:12 to play only to see Goldstein come up court and drain another three—his fifth of the night— to put the Bearcats up by nine with 4:51 to go.

York once again managed to claw back and make it a two-possession game after a Vails put-back made it 66-61, Baruch, with a minute to go.  York then benefited from a pair of missed Baruch free throws.  Du'Quan Lawson came up court on the next possession and made shot in traffic to cut the deficit to three points.  But York could not get closer.  After a York foul, Baruch made two free throws to go up by five with 28 ticks left.  The Cardinals could not score on the next possession and Baruch was able to ice the game with free throws after another foul.

Goldstein led all scorers with 23 points, while connecting on 5-of-6 from long distance.  Edward Roscigno finished with 10 points and Fuat Yupar added 11.  York was led by Vails, who had a team-high points 19 points and four assists.  Du'Quan Lawson added 15 points and two assists and Donald Rodriguez finished with nine points and ten boards.

York will return to action on Saturday when they travel to John Jay at 6:00 p.m.
