Women’s Basketball Struggles in Second Half, Loses to USMMA, 53-34

KINGS POINT, NY.— The York College women's basketball team was outscored by 15 points in the second half and fell to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy by a score of 53-34 in a non-conference contest on Monday evening. 
 
The Mariners led from start to finish but the game was tight for the entire first half.  USMMA jumped out to quick 8-0 lead but York quickly followed with seven unanswered to cut the deficit to one point.  From there, USMMA held a one or two-possession lead for most of the first half. 
 
Things started to get away from the Cardinals midway through the second half.  Trailing by six points, the Cardinals surrendered six unanswered to see their deficit double to 12 points.  USMMA's Demi Vanderwal nailed a three-pointer to make it 36-24 with 11:49 to play. 
 
Later in the half, with the lead now at 13 points (44-31) for USMMA, the Mariners went on a 9-0 to put the game away, making the score 53-31 after a pair of made free throws.  The 22-point lead would be their largest of the night. 
 
USMMA was led by Roshenda Josephs, who scored a game-high 19 points, while recording five assists and eight boards. Tamara Kalieh finished with 12 points and eight boards and Rebecca Resor had 13 rebounds and four blocks.
 
York was led by Angelika Ruggiano, who finished with ten points.  Ishonda McFarland and Danielle Dun each added six points and 11 rebounds.
 
York falls to 0-14, while USMMA improves to 7-6.  The Cardinals will visit Medgar Evers on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.
