Men’s Basketball Struggles Against Hunter

BOX SCORE
JAMAICA, N.Y. – The York College men's basketball team did not put forth one of its better efforts this season, as turnovers and poor outside shooting resulted in an 83-69 loss to conference-foe Hunter College on Friday night.

York committed 22 turnovers on the evening, which Hunter converted into 27 points.  The Cardinals, who have lived and died by the three pointer at times this season, were a dismal 2-for-15 (13 percent) from long range on the night.

Conversely, Hunter had a strong shooting night, converting 50 percent of its shots (33-66) and also making 50 percent of its three pointers (6-12).

The Hawks were led by point guard Jerrell Antley, who finished with a game-high 24 points and nine assists.  Hunter had five other players reach double-figures.  Lorenzo Brown had a double-double, with ten points and 15 boards.

York found itself in an early hole and spent the entire game trying to dig out of it.  A Brown lay-up with 12:42 to go in the opening half gave the Hawks a comfortable, 24-11 lead.  The Cardinals rallied to cut the lead to one point (26-25), with 4:31 left in the half, only to see the Hawks catch fire to end the half, and extend its lead to 16 points (47-31) going into the locker room.

In the second half, York trailed by as many as 23 points but once again rallied to make things interesting.  A 24-6 run over a nine minute span helped cut the margin to 65-60 with 3:30 to play.  But the Hawks followed with buckets on their next three possessions to put the game out of reach.

York was led by Shamir Wilkinson in the loss, who finished with a double-double, scoring 18 points and grabbing a career-high 16 rebounds.  Tony Vails netted 20 points and Jose Arroyo chipped in 14.

York falls to 7-7, 3-3 in the CUNYAC, while Hunter improves to 6-9, 3-3 in CUNYAC play. The Cardinals will visit Ramapo College on Monday at 7:00 p.m.
