JAMAICA, NY— The York College women's volleyball hosted the CUNY Athletic Conference Multi-Match on Saturday afternoon and split a pair of matches on the day. The Cardinals dropped their opening match to Baruch College 3-0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-12) but topped John Jay College 3-0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-12) to end the day on a good note.
BARUCH RECAP
York struggled in the first set allowing the Bearcats (3-4, 2-0 CUNYAC) to jump out to a 12-1 advantage. Serve receive was the problem as the Cardinals allowed eight aces in that stretch. York could not recover and Baruch ran away with the set 25-12.
York came out much stronger in the second set and went on an 8-2 run to take an 11-5 lead. But the lead would not last long, as Baruch turned it on from there and scored 20 of the next 22 points to take the second set. The Cardinals kept it tight in the third set in the early-going, only to see Baruch turn it on towards the end to run away with the set and the match.
The key to the victory for Baruch was their serve game, as they served up an impressive 23 aces on the day. Rebecca Peralta accounted for ten of those aces. She added nine kills and four digs to lead Baruch.
The Cardinals were led by sophomore
Stayce Kay Muirhead, who had four kills and junior
Pamela Yap, who served up four aces.
JOHN JAY RECAP
York played improved volleyball in the second match as they dramatically cut down on the hitting errors. York got seven kills apiece from Muirhead (.158) and junior
Sharon Fordyce (.235). Defensively, York got a nice match from Yap who contributed a match-high ten digs, to go along with seven assists. Junior
Emely Vasquez added three kills and six digs. The Cardinals also served up 14 aces on the day, led by freshman
Allison Li and junior
