Sarah Lawrence Edges Women’s Tennis, 5-4
BRONXVILLE, N.Y.— By the thinnest of margins, the York College women's tennis team fell to Sarah Lawrence College, 5-4, at Andrews Tennis Courts in Bronxville, Saturday.
In doubles action, Sarah Lawrence's top pair, sophomore Kayla Pincus and Nora Landes defeated York's
Valerie Roland and
Anna Ko, 8-2. York's
Nikita Ramsay and
Maleeka Chin evened the match with their 8-3 win in the No. 2 doubles position. Sarah Lawrence's Lane Garber and her sophomore partner Mary Kairidi regained the Sarah Lawrence lead by wrapping up the final doubles match, 8-2.
With the Gryphons in front 2-1 after doubles action, Garber added another Sarah Lawrence point with a 6-3, 6-3 victory in the No. 5 singles match. In her first collegiate match of the season, Kairidi picked up her second win with a 7-5, 7-5 triumph in the No. 6 match.
York took the No. 4 match next, as Ramsay pulled out a 7-5, 7-5 win to cut the Sarah Lawrence lead to 4-2. But Landes clinched the match for Sarah Lawrence with her victory in the No. 1 singles match over Roland. After picking up a 6-2 first set, she duplicated the effort in the second set to earn the match-clinching point.
York was able to close out the match with wins at #2 and #3 singles but would fall one match short. Chin won 6-2, 6-2 at second singles, while Ko was a 7-5, 7-5 winner at #3 singles.
York falls to 2-4 on the season, while Sarah Lawrence improves to 4-2. The Cardinals will take on Hunter College at 3:30 p.m. on the York College tennis courts.
