BOX SCORE
BRONX, N.Y.— The York College men's soccer team held a two-goal lead in the first half but could not hold on, as Lehman College rallied to tie the game and eventually win in overtime by a score of 4-3 on Wednesday evening.
York's
Sonam Sherpa was responsible for the first two Cardinals' goals. Sherpa opened the scoring in the 20
th minute when he scored off a direct kick, following a Lehman foul. Just four minutes later, he added another unassisted goal when a misplay by the Lehman keeper gave him a scoring opportunity. Maurice Whyte, who had just entered the game, bobbled a ball in front of the net. Sherpa recovered the loose ball and put in net to give York, what appeared to be a comfortable, 2-0 cushion.
But the lead would prove to be short-lived. Lehman's Momar Thian scored just over three minutes later to cut the lead in half. Then just over a minute after that, Oumar Niang added an unassisted goal to even the score up at 2-2.
In the second half, Lehman would take the lead when Niang added his second goal of the contest. This time, it came when he headed a ball in the net off a corner kick in the 55
th minute.
Despite allowing three unanswered goals, the Cardinals fought back and got even again when
Brian Amaya scored unassisted in the 79
th minute. Another miscue by the keeper aided York. The keeper made a play on a cross but deflected the ball straight to Amaya. He had an open look at goal and put the ball in net easily to get the equalizer.
In the overtime session, Lehman got the golden goal, with 1:48 left in the first overtime period. Geovanny Arrendondo crossed the ball into the middle and Bismark Appiah headed the ball into goal to give the Lightning the victory.
The tough loss for York leaves the Cardinals still searching for their first victory, as they drop to 0-8-1 on the season and 0-3-1 in CUNY Athletic Conference action. Lehman improves to 2-7-1, 1-1 CUNYAC with the victory.
The Cardinals will visit Baruch College next Wednesday at the Metropolitan Oval in Maspeth, NY at 6:00 p.m.
