JAMAICA, NY— The York College women's volleyball team lost a pair of contests on Tuesday evening falling to conference-rival Hunter College, 3-0 (25-7, 25-11, 25-14) in the opening match before dropping a hard-fought effort against New Jersey City University by a score of 3-1 (25-15, 25-18, 23-25, 26-24).
Against Hunter, the Cardinals struggled to get anything going. They had a hard time handling the Hawks serves as Hunter recorded 20 aces on the night. Hitting errors were also a problem as York hit -.210 on the evening. These two factors made for a lopsided score.
The Hawks were led by Paulina Jobcyz, who had a match-high five kills and nine aces, while hitting .364 on the night. York got a team-high five kills and two blocks from
Stayce Kay Muirhead and a match-high six digs from
Allison Li.
Against NJCU, it looked like the Cardinals were headed for another sweep on the night until the third set when they picked up the intensity. Already down by two sets, and trailing in the third by a score of 12-8, York suddenly turned it on. The Cardinals ran off five straight points to go up 13-12, thanks in part to some strong serving by
Pamela Yap, who served up three consecutive aces. From there, York took the momentum and eventually the set, when a Muirhead kill gave the Cardinals a 25-23 victory.
York continued to look strong in the fourth, and was just two points away from forcing a fifth set, when a hitting error by NJCU gave York a 23-21 advantage. But two errors by York and a kill by NJCU put the Gothic Knights back on top 24-23. The Cardinals fought off one match point but two straight hitting errors followed and NJCU was able to hold on, 26-24, and take the match.
Muirhead and
Sharon Fordyce led York with six kills each, while Muirhead also picked up four blocks. Yap had a match-high 16 digs and Li added 15 digs. NJCU was led by Indigo Hatcher, who had 12 kills and Jade Medley, who finished with ten. Kiara Martinez had 16 digs and Cindy Garcia recorded a match-high 31 assists.
With the two losses, York falls to 2-4, 1-2 in the CUNYAC on the year. Hunter improves to 6-3, 4-0 in CUNYAC play and NJCU improves to 3-0. The Cardinals will host Sarah Lawrence College on Thursday at 8:00 p.m.
